We had a discussion with him regarding Medica’s developments, key offerings, his role in the success of Medica. Let’s delve into it.
Dr Vikash, please brief us about Medica Institute of Orthopaedic and the ideas and developments that led to its inception.
The Orthopaedic department at Medica Superspeciality Hospital was established in 2010 and, over time, developed into the success it is today. Medica’s Orthopaedic department has extensive expertise in super specialty orthopaedics in addition to routine trauma management. With thousands of joint replacements and minimally invasive procedures, the team combines skill, dedication, and world-class services at an affordable cost. We offer our patients comprehensive care and treatment to ensure a complete recovery from bone ailments and a quick return to normalcy.
Since its inception, the department has developed resources and trained staff to perform specialized procedures such as joint replacement, sports injury treatment, spine surgery, arthroscopic, and sports surgery, paediatric ortho surgery, hand, and trauma care. It also has a highly advanced and thriving Orthopaedic Bone Cancer Service. Within three years of its establishment, the department was accredited by the National Board of Examination to begin postgraduate orthopaedic training in the form of DNB, and the seats in DNB were expanded to include six postgraduate seats in Orthopaedics.
The department’s advancement to becoming a pioneer in joint replacement surgery, sports injuries, and trauma management led to accreditation for the FNB arthroplasty programs. This is a MCH equivalent degree awarded in Joint Replacement Surgery. Medica hospital’s orthopaedic department is the only department in eastern India to be accepted for this super specialty program.
In terms of cutting-edge technology, the orthopaedic department was the first to use the PRP technique in orthopaedics twelve years ago, inspiring other departments to follow suit. Furthermore, we have put in place effective technologies such as navigation in joint replacement surgery and a strong sports injury management system.
What are its key offerings and how is it impacting the demographic concerned?
Medica has a highly qualified team of orthopaedic surgeons who are professionals in their fields. The dedicated team of experts works tirelessly to provide patients with world-class care in areas such as Complex Trauma, Paediatric Orthopaedics, Spinal Surgeries, Sports Injury Surgeries, Joint Replacement Surgery, and Arthroscopy surgery.
We established arthroscopic knee, shoulder, ankle, and hip surgery in Eastern India & we are one of Eastern India’s few hip arthroscopy treatment centres. Tremano for shoulder surgery is one of the most recent additions to the orthopaedic department, indicating the department’s dedication to ongoing progress in shoulder surgery. The orthopaedic system will be upgraded soon to enable robotic surgery.
Kindly tell us about yourself and your professional milestones so far. What has been your source of motivation in this extensive career journey that has led you to success today?
I am the Group Director of Orthopaedic Sciences for Medica Group of Hospitals and Vice Chairman of Medica Superspeciality Hospital Kolkata with over 25 years of experience and over 25 000 successful orthopaedic procedures under my belt. After receiving extensive training in Musculoskeletal Disorders, I have successfully treated patients suffering from Joint Disease, Sports and Work injuries, and those in need of Arthroscopy, Joint Replacement, and Reconstruction Surgeries, among other things, over the years. I had the opportunity of performing the first same stage bilateral knee replacement surgery in Bangladesh and the state of Manipur. In past was invited as Guest Joint Replacement Surgeon by the past Health Minister of Bangladesh to perform Joint Replacement Surgeries.
In what ways are the avenues provided by emerging technology helping you provide the best orthopaedic surgery treatment to your patients?
Orthopaedic and joint surgery patterns and conceptions have shifted as a result of technological advancements. All procedures have become minimally invasive, short-stay, nearly painless, swift in recovery and rehabilitation, and targeted with predictable outcomes. Technology has significantly increased accuracy, saving lives and limbs, resulting in enormous economic benefits and savings through early returns to work.
What are the challenges you face during treatments? How have you infused your leadership skills to turn them into opportunities for the industry?
Odd hours and tight deadlines are often difficult for both the individual and the team. The strength of goodwill and ethical values, as well as patients’ good wishes and pleasing demeanour, washes away all problems and makes them appear trivial.
Adequate compensation, not only in terms of quality-of-life standards but also in terms of skill development and caring work environments, is extremely beneficial in nurturing the individual in the team and conferring responsibility, which leads to the development of future leaders.
What are the future goals of your hospital and how do you envision upscaling its operations and reach in 2024 and beyond?
Future goals include improving technology and connecting people with more recent advances in the treatment of bone and joint disorders, making healthcare affordable to all. Additionally, lowering the cost of innovative technology so that the Orthopaedic departments of our country improve, resulting in the best bang for the buck.
