Cancer Awareness, Prevention and Early Detection (CAPED) Trust (www.capedindia.org) is a community outreach organisation working in the healthcare domain since 2014. Our core area of work is cancer prevention and early detection, particularly women’s cancer with a special focus on cervical cancer. We break down barriers to women’s health and empower women to take action regarding their own health. We achieve this through community outreach, awareness and facilitating cancer screening and undertaking patient navigation for women from economically weaker sections of the society.
CAPED developed a collaborative model for cervical cancer prevention, piloted in Gurugram District, Haryana, with the Gurugram Health Department and American Cancer Society. This effort led to an Implementation Guide for Community Organizations and ongoing research in Jaipur, Rajasthan, and Raipur, Chhattisgarh. This includes reaching 268 villages, training 213 ASHAs and 61 staff nurses, supporting 97 patients, and screening 14,453 women over 2.5 years.
Our next goals are to demonstrate success of the model across geographies, and to scale the model to state-level interventions across various states, thus accelerating India’s path towards a Cervical Cancer Mukt Bharat.
Patient Navigation Program (PNP)
CAPED undertakes patient navigation to support individuals who screen positive during cancer screenings, ensuring they receive further diagnosis and treatment promptly. This year we have supported over 678 patients under PNP. We provide counseling and support to help patients understand their options and encourage treatment adherence for improved health outcomes.
Research & Advocacy
CAPED engages in advocacy efforts to influence national policies that facilitate broader access to cervical cancer prevention methods. We work towards strengthening partnerships with organisations like the Asia Pacific Women Cancer Coalition (Founding Member of APAC WCC); the Global HPV Consortium (Technical & Advisory Partner) to drive impactful initiatives & FIND (Panelist at National & State Level Consultation towards elimination for cervical cancer in India through Accessible Screening & Treatment).
Cancer Screening
CAPED facilitates screening and early detection of common cancers by organising free screening camps for low-income communities. We provide preventive screening services focusing on cervical, breast, and oral cancers for women aged 30-65 years, and oral cancer screenings for men above 30 years of age. This year we had conducted over 135 screening camps & screened more than 10,377 individuals across different projects in Delhi, Haryana, & Uttar Pradesh. Additionally, we collaborate with organisations like National Institute of Cancer Prevention & Research (NICPR) to train Accrediated Social Health Acitivits (ASHAs), Auxilliary Nurse Midwife (ANMs), staff nurses, and healthcare professionals, ensuring effective community outreach and support in cancer prevention and detection efforts.
