Uttar Pradesh has emerged as the top performer in digital out-patient department (OPD) registrations under the National Health Authority’s (NHA) ‘scan and share’ service, generating 12.4 million OPD tokens out of the total 47 million recorded over the past two years. This service allows patients to streamline their hospital visits by scanning a QR code at OPD registration counters and sharing their Ayushman Bharat Health Account (ABHA) number for instant registration.
The ‘scan and share’ initiative aims to reduce long waiting times at healthcare facilities by enabling patients to register digitally for their OPD appointments. The service has been well-received in several states, with Uttar Pradesh leading the charge, followed by Andhra Pradesh with 8.1 million tokens and Bihar with 5.7 million tokens.
However, the overall adoption of the service varies significantly across states. Major southern states, such as Tamil Nadu and Kerala, have seen minimal uptake, with Tamil Nadu issuing only 949 tokens to date and Kerala generating fewer than 10,000. Other states at the bottom of the list include Himachal Pradesh with 1,365 tokens and Goa with 2,381.
According to the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) dashboard as of September 5, 2024, Uttar Pradesh also boasts 15 of the top 25 healthcare facilities with the highest digital OPD registrations, followed by five in Andhra Pradesh. The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, leads all individual centers, having generated over two million tokens through the digital OPD service.
Currently, the ‘scan and share’ service is available at 11,700 healthcare facilities across 591 districts in 35 states and union territories, excluding Nagaland. This digital initiative not only simplifies the OPD registration process but also helps manage patient flow more efficiently.
Looking ahead, official sources indicate plans to extend the service beyond OPD registrations to include pharmacy queues and laboratory services, further enhancing the patient experience at hospitals across the country.
