Tamil Nadu has recorded 6,565 cases of dengue from January 1 to July 24 this year, with cases rising in Chennai, Coimbatore, Krishnagiri, Tirupattur, Theni, Madurai, Tirunelveli, Namakkal, and Thanjavur. Health Minister Ma. Subramanian stated that control measures are being implemented in response.
After inaugurating a special medical camp in Chennai on Thursday, the Minister noted that the Health Department, in collaboration with local bodies, is actively identifying diseases such as dengue, jaundice, and influenza. Cases of scrub typhus were found in Cuddalore, Thanjavur, and Chennai, while leptospirosis cases appeared in Chennai, Kanyakumari, and Tiruvallur. Jaundice was reported in Chennai, Tiruchi, and Theni, and influenza cases were identified in Chennai, Coimbatore, and Kancheepuram districts. Appropriate preventive measures are being taken.
Since January 1, Tamil Nadu has reported 1,481 cases of leptospirosis, 2,639 cases of scrub typhus, 22 cases of rabies, and 1,750 cases of jaundice. The Minister also mentioned that there have been three deaths due to dengue, attributed to delays in seeking medical help. In anticipation of the northeast monsoon, special medical camps are being organized, and public awareness campaigns are underway.
The state has 476 mobile medical units and 805 Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram (RBSK) units in operation. Medical camps are promptly set up in areas where more than three fever cases are reported. Daily fever reports are collected from 2,972 government and private hospitals, and mosquito control measures, including fogging and spraying, are carried out by 22,384 temporary workers.
In light of Nipah virus cases in neighboring Kerala, screening of travelers from Kerala is ongoing. Permanent surveillance camps have been established at Nadugani, Choladi, Thaloor, Nambiyarkunnu, and Paalavayal.
