“Four patients who tested positive for the virus have died, but their deaths were attributed to pre-existing health conditions, not the Zika infection, they aged between 68 to 78,” according to government sources.

On Tuesday, civic officials in Pune, Maharashtra, reported at least 66 confirmed cases of the Zika virus.

“Four patients who tested positive for the virus have died, but their deaths were attributed to pre-existing health conditions, not the Zika infection, they aged between 68 to 78,” according to government sources.

“Among those sick are 26 pregnant women, who are under constant supervision. “Fortunately, the majority of them are in good health,” they said.

On June 20, a 46-year-old doctor tested positive for the Zika virus, marking the first incidence in Pune this year. His 15-year-old daughter eventually tested positive for the virus.

The health department of the Pune Municipal Corporation has confirmed that no deaths have been directly linked to the Zika virus in the country. However, the department would continue to transmit the reports of the four deceased patients to the Maharashtra government’s death audit committee for evaluation.

Zika virus infection during pregnancy can result in microcephaly, a disease in which the baby’s head is considerably smaller due to improper brain development. The virus spreads via the bite of an infected Aedes mosquito, which also transmits dengue and chikungunya.

The PMC health department is implementing efforts to contain the outbreak, such as surveillance and fumigation to prevent mosquito breeding.
