Mefenamic acid, a component of the painkiller Meftal, has been linked to adverse events, including drug reactions with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms (DRESS) syndrome, according to a drug safety alert issued by the Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission (IPC).
Mefenamic acid painkillers are given to treat a variety of conditions, including tooth pain, inflammation, fever, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, and dysmenorrhea.

In its alert, the commission stated that DRESS syndrome was discovered through an initial examination of adverse medication reactions from the Pharmacovigilance Programme of India (PvPI) database. A severe allergic reaction brought on by specific medications is known as DRESS syndrome. Skin rash, fever, and lymphadenopathy are some of its symptoms, which can appear two to eight weeks after starting the medication.

The notice, sent on November 30, states that “Healthcare professionals, patients, and consumers are advised to closely monitor the possibility of the above adverse drug reaction (ADR) associated with the use of the suspected drug.”

The statement advised that in the event that such a response is experienced, individuals should report the incident to the PvPI’s national coordination center, which is overseen by the commission. This can be done by submitting a form on the website www.ipc.gov.in, using the ADR PvPI Android mobile app, or by calling the PvPI hotline at 1800-180-3024.

Rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, dysmenorrhea, mild to moderate pain, inflammation, fever, and dental pain are among the conditions for which the medication Meftal is prescribed.

According to a new study, there are negative effects of painkillers on the kidneys, acidity, sleepiness, skin rashes, and allergies. Experts advise against taking any medications on their own without first visiting their doctors, even if they are easily obtained for sale over-the-counter (OTC).
