India’s Medical Tourism Surge: Why Global Patients Choose India for Affordable Healthcare and Wellness

Medical Tourism

India has emerged as a leading destination for medical tourism, offering world-class healthcare services at affordable prices. According to Crisil, the number of medical tourists visiting India is projected to rise to 7.3 million in 2024, up from 6.1 million in 2023. This surge highlights India’s growing reputation as a hub for “medical value travel,” drawing patients from around the world seeking high-quality treatment at a fraction of the cost they would face in developed countries.

Several factors contribute to India’s appeal as a medical tourism destination. The country boasts an extensive network of skilled medical professionals, well-equipped hospitals, and cutting-edge technology, enabling it to provide top-notch healthcare services across various specialties. From advanced cardiac surgeries to organ transplants, dental care, and cosmetic procedures, India offers a wide range of medical treatments. The affordability factor is one of the primary reasons for this growth, as treatments in India can cost 60-80% less compared to Western nations, making it a more viable option for many international patients.

Speaking to HT Lifestyle, Dr. Kamlesh Kothari, a dental implant specialist and maxillofacial surgeon, explained why India has become a popular destination for dental care. “Travelling to India for dental treatment has been increasing due to the cost-effectiveness, availability of highly qualified surgeons, and hospitals equipped with modern facilities. Minimal waiting times and the opportunity to combine treatment with tourism add to the country’s allure,” said Dr. Kothari.

In addition to medical treatments, India has long been known for its wellness therapies, including Ayurveda, yoga, and alternative healing methods, which further enhances its appeal to health-conscious tourists. Many visitors see India not only as a place to undergo medical procedures but also as a destination to rejuvenate and recover.

As India continues to expand its healthcare infrastructure and maintain competitive pricing, the country is well-positioned to remain a leader in global medical tourism. With a steady influx of international patients, India’s medical tourism industry is expected to play a pivotal role in the country’s economy and healthcare ecosystem.
