It is crucial for women to monitor any alterations in their menstrual cycles, as irregular periods can serve as a potential indicator of cervical cancer. Heightened awareness regarding Human Papillomavirus (HPV) plays a pivotal role in global health consciousness, shedding light on the widespread yet preventable risks associated with HPV infections. This awareness serves as a catalyst for enhancing education, advocacy, and proactive measures against HPV-related diseases, including cervical, anal, penile, vaginal, vulvar, and oropharyngeal cancers. Women should remain vigilant about their health and promptly address any changes in their menstrual patterns, as irregular periods could signal an underlying health concern like cervical cancer.

During an interview, Dr. Jyoti Mehta, MD Radiation and Clinical Oncologist at TGH Onco Life Cancer Centre in Talegaon, emphasized the importance of actively monitoring and addressing changes in menstrual patterns as proactive measures to maintain reproductive health and prevent cervical cancer. Cervical cancer originates in the cervix, the narrow passage between the uterus and the vagina, and is commonly caused by persistent infection with high-risk types of human papillomavirus (HPV), leading to abnormal cell changes over time. If left untreated, these abnormal cells can progress into cancer, underscoring the significance of early detection for successful treatment.

Dr. Mehta outlined several symptoms that could indicate cervical cancer, including unusual discharge with a foul odour or blood, abnormal vaginal bleeding between periods or after menopause, pelvic pain, and discomfort during intercourse. She highlighted the tendency for irregular periods to be dismissed as a normal part of menopause or hormonal changes but cautioned against overlooking them, emphasizing their potential link to cervical cancer.

According to Dr. Mehta, irregular periods can serve as a warning sign of hormonal imbalances or underlying health issues that require attention. These irregularities in menstrual patterns, such as unpredictable bleeding or prolonged periods, may signify abnormalities in the cervix, posing an increased risk of developing cervical cancer if left unaddressed.
